How human rights activists are prosecuted abroad

When authoritarian states persecute critical voices even when they are outside the state’s territory, this is referred to as transnational repression. Some states, including Germany, offer protection to persecuted human rights activists. However, the measures taken so far are not yet sufficient, according to Selmin Çalışkan.

Selmin Çalışkan is a human rights expert, strategy consultant and executive coach. Previously, she was the Director of Institutional Relations at the Berlin office of the Open Society Foundations, as well as the Secretary General of Amnesty International Germany. She has also worked for medica mondiale and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), including in Afghanistan.
