Kenya as a pioneer of clean energy and a German app designed to circumvent censorship
Germany’s international broadcaster DW has developed a lightweight app designed to help users circumvent digital censorship and access DW content in countries where parts of the internet are restricted. While governments continue to escalate blocking tactics, the app still offers a comparatively robust way for users to stay informed.
It combines several features, including an integrated VPN, no personal data transmission, article sharing via Bluetooth and a data-saving mode for low-bandwidth or unstable connections. To reduce reliance on app stores (which may be blocked or monitored), DW Access can be shared via messengers or Bluetooth, or downloaded directly from www.access-unlocked.org.
Kenya as pioneer in clean energy
Kenya has emerged as a pioneer in the field of clean energy within Africa. In just over a decade, the country has already increased access to the electricity grid by 42 %, ensuring that the majority of its electricity comes from clean energy sources such as geothermal and hydroelectric power.
However, this is just the first step in the larger shift towards renewable energy integration. Variable renewable energy (VRE) sources, such as wind and solar, only account for a small part of the country’s electricity generation. To account for their uncertainty and location constraints, it is essential to have the adequate grid flexibility and infrastructure in place. Kenya is currently halfway through the International Energy Agency’s six-phase framework that would allow the country to better secure its energy future.
